Howard Road gas meter relocation
SGN is carrying out work to replace gas mains at Howard Road, Portsmouth. As part of this work, some gas meters will need to be moved from inside customers’ homes to new meter boxes outside at ground level.
Your existing gas meter will not be replaced. It will be moved to a safer location outside your home. We've been made aware of the work and have approved SGN's contractor, FPF Utilities, to carry it out.
The work is being completed by FPF Utilities on behalf of SGN.
All members of the contractor's team will carry identification badges. We recommend asking to see identification before allowing anyone into your home.
What work is taking place?
To help keep gas supplies safe and reliable, the contractor will:
Move your existing gas meter from inside your home to a new meter box outside
Install a new external meter box
Install new gas pipework
Arrange an inspection of your current meter
Disconnect and reconnect your gas supply when the work takes place
Complete any necessary repairs to areas affected by the work
Your gas meter is not being replaced. The existing meter will be moved outside for safety reasons.
If your home is affected, please:
Read the letter sent by the contractor
Contact the contractor to arrange a suitable appointment
Let the contractor know if you'll be away during the planned work
Make sure the gas meter can be accessed on the day of the appointment
Ask to see identification before allowing anyone into your home
If your meter has already been moved, you don't need to contact the contractor again about the relocation.
The contractor needs access to affected homes to:
Inspect the existing gas meter
Move the meter to the new external meter box
Reconnect your gas supply when the work has been completed
Access is important so the work can be completed safely and without unnecessary delays.
The contractor has advised that if a meter cannot be relocated before the gas main replacement work starts, your gas supply may be disconnected.
If you're worried about access arrangements or are unable to attend an appointment, please contact the contractor as soon as possible using the details provided in your letter.
You may receive a white card through the post explaining when your gas supply is due to be disconnected.
The card will confirm:
The date work is scheduled to take place
That the gas supply may be disconnected from 8am
That a separate team of gas engineers will reconnect the supply later the same day
That access will be needed for both disconnection and reconnection
If you have any questions about dates, access arrangements or reconnection, please contact FPF Utilities directly.
In some cases, excavation work may be needed to complete the installation.
Where work has affected an area on your property, repairs are usually completed within 5 to 7 days after your gas supply has been reconnected.
Repairs in shared or public areas will be completed once work across the road has finished.
If you're unhappy with any repair work, please contact the contractor's Customer Liaison Manager.
We'll work with SGN and FPF Utilities to help keep disruption to a minimum.
During the work:
Bin collection days should remain the same unless your local service provider tells you otherwise
Some on-street parking spaces may be temporarily suspended to allow the work to be carried out safely
Vehicles may need to be moved if temporary parking restrictions are introduced
The contractor will aim to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.
The contractor's letter includes information about the Priority Services Register.
If you think you may need additional support during the work, please contact the contractor using the details provided in your letter.
