Tips for locks and hinges
By checking on and oiling the locks and hinges in your home correctly, you'll help to reduce the wear to them so that you can get the most of out of them.
For locks we recommend:
- Regular cleaning: Use a damp cloth with mild soapy water to clean the locks. Avoid soaking the cloth to prevent water from entering the locking mechanism. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth
- Lubrication: Apply a lubricant like WD-40 or a silicone-based spray at least once a year. Insert the key and turn it to distribute the lubricant
- Avoid chemical cleaners: Steer clear of chemical-based cleaners as they can damage the locks
- Check alignment: Ensure the lock and strike plate are properly aligned. If not, adjust and tighten the screws
- Gentle handling: Avoid using excessive force when locking or unlocking to prevent damage
For hinges we recommend:
- Regular cleaning: Remove hinge pins and clean the hinges with a mild detergent solution. Dry them thoroughly to prevent rust
- Lubrication: Use a silicone-based lubricant on the hinge pins and moving parts. Avoid thick substances like grease
- Tighten screws: Periodically check and tighten any loose screws.
