Bonfires
Bonfires might seem like a simple way to dispose of garden waste or enjoy an evening outdoors, but they can pose serious risks to safety, health, and neighbour relationships. We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable in their homes and shared spaces.
Bonfires are not permitted at any time in shared or communal garden spaces, courtyards, or outdoor areas. This is a zero-tolerance rule because fires in shared spaces put many people at risk and create smoke and nuisance for everyone.
Bonfires in private gardens are strongly discouraged. If you do choose to have one, please follow these safety guidelines:
- Check your local council’s rules (many areas restrict or ban bonfires)
- Keep the fire small, safe, and supervised at all times
- Never burn household waste, plastics, or hazardous materials
- Avoid creating smoke or smells that could disturb neighbours
- Safety: Fires can spread quickly and cause serious harm
- Health: Smoke affects people with asthma, children, and older residents
- Neighbour Relations: Smoke and smells often lead to complaints
- Tenancy Risk: Unsafe or nuisance bonfires may breach your tenancy agreement
Instead of bonfires, consider:
- Using your council’s garden waste bin service
- Visiting your local recycling centre
- Starting a compost bin (private gardens only)
- Bonfires are not allowed in communal areas – we have a zero tolerance to these
- In private gardens, bonfires should be avoided and must be safe and respectful
- Unsafe or nuisance bonfires may lead to tenancy action
