It’s important you clear your rent account before your tenancy ends as this could affect your credit score and ability to secure housing in future.
Depending on how you pay your rent you may need to take differing action.
If you're in receipt of Universal Credit the amount that you receive may be affected by the date that your tenancy ends, in the following ways:
- If your rent is paid to us direct from Universal Credit, please update your journal with the tenancy end date. We'll also let Universal Credit know from our end
- If the rent in your new property will be greater than you are currently paying, the amount included in your Universal Credit for housing costs will increase for the whole of your monthly assessment period
- If the rent in your new property will be less than you are currently paying, the amount included in your Universal Credit for housing costs will decrease for the whole of your monthly assessment period
- If you will not be paying rent where you are moving to, no housing costs will be included in your Universal Credit for the whole of your monthly assessment period
- If there is an overlap of the tenancies, you won’t be able to apply for 2 homes payment as this is not available under Universal Credit
If you are in receipt of Housing Benefit and moving to another landlord, you may be able to claim a two homes payment if your new tenancy overlaps with your current one.
You’ll need to contact the Housing Benefit department of the council you are moving to and from if these are different.
Your direct debit will continue to take until your tenancy has formally ended, at which point your account will be reviewed within 4 weeks to arrange for any arrears repayment or refund of credit. Should you wish to discuss an exact amount required to clear your tenancy before you leave, please contact your income officer on 0800 652 0898.
