Street lighting

Street lighting plays an important part in keeping our neighbourhoods safe and welcoming. Find out more about what to do and who can help when something isn’t working as it should.

Responsibility for streetlights depends on who owns the road they are located on.
If you are unsure, you could either take a look on the lamp post and see if there are any identifying markings similar to these.

If you spot markings like these, it usually means the council looks after the lamp post and you'll need to let them know directly.
Some developers may still own the road and have managing agents in place to look after them.

You can report it to them using this link:

On the website you'll need to locate the streetlight with a local post code to report the issue.

To report an repair for a streetlight we own, please get in touch and we can get this looked into with you. You're not able to raise this in your online account as there are checks that we need to complete.

If the streetlight is our responsibility:

  • We’ll arrange for our T Darby to investigate and repair it
  • The contractor uses specialist equipment, so this will not be attended by our VIVID operatives

To make sure the repair is completed as quickly as possible, we’ll need clear details about:

  • The location of the light
  • Any nearby landmarks or identifying features. i.e. ‘between numbers 11 & 13 the avenue’

If you're unsure, please get in touch and we can investigate.

If we confirm that the streetlight belongs to the local council:

  • We’ll explain this to you clearly
  • We can report the issue to the council for you while we're speaking to you

If you’d like to receive updates from the council, with your consent we can share your contact details with them.
If you prefer not to, we’ll submit the report using VIVID’s details instead.

Solar powered streetlights look very similar to normal streetlights except there will often be a solar panel visible which the light uses to charge the fitting.
As this type of lighting is a very new concept, you are most likely to find these on new developments.

If the issue is with a security light attached to a house:

  • You’ll need to check and replace the bulb first, if possible
  • If the light still isn’t working, we may arrange for an electrician to attend

Please note:

  • If the security light was installed by you as part of a property improvement, ongoing repairs are your responsibility
  • If access equipment such as a ladder is required, we’ll assess whether we can safely attend

If you spot anything that needs repairing, please
get in touch and we'll be glad to assist.
For any electrical issues, a qualified electrician will need to visit first to make sure the area is safe. If there are exposed wires or safety concerns, please call us on 0800 652 0898.
In most cases, we'll arrange an initial inspection before any work starts. Sometimes repairs may be delayed due to bad weather.

If you report an emergency, our team may need to temporarily cordon off the affected area and remove any debris. If there are exposed wires, a specialist electrician will be called out to make them safe.
We may need to raise a separate job for any further electrical repairs required.
