Harassment
If someone is threatening, intimidating, or insulting you regularly, that's harassment. If you're being harassed, which could by someone in your community or by an ex-partner, report it to the police and to us.
- Spoken or written abuse, intended to intimidate or humiliate
- Physical gestures or behaviour directly targeted
- Threats of harm or attempts to control situations
- Unwelcome contact (calls, texts, social media)
- Stalking, which can sometime be linked to harassment
Harassment can happen in the community or involve someone you know, such as an ex-partner. If you’re experiencing this, report it to the police first, then let us know so we can support you.
- For emergencies, please call the police on 999
- For non-emergencies, please call 101
- You can also use the online reporting if preferred - Contact us | Police.uk
Harassment is a criminal offence and so it's important that you report it as such.
- Proving harassment can be difficult. So, it helps if you keep a record of every time it happens. You can use diary sheets to make sure you record all the details if this is useful. You can start using these at any time, but please don’t delay in reporting to the police or ourselves
- If you use the diary sheets or make a log a different way, you can send completed details to us through Live Chat or if you have an ongoing case, you can upload it to the Cases section in your Online Account
- Ensure that you include all the details of the incident, including dates, times, the behaviour and the impact that this had on you
- If the person harassing you is an ex-partner or family member, this may be Domestic Abuse. Please also refer to Domestic Abuse for further advice and guidance
- If you believe the behaviour is targeted because of a protected characteristic (e.g., age, sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion), this may be hate-motivated behaviour. Make sure you explain this when reporting to the police and to us, so you receive the right response
- Harassment can escalate and put people at risk of harm
- Reporting helps us and the police take action to protect you and others
- It allows us to work with safeguarding agencies to keep you safe
- People experiencing harassment may also face financial abuse, coercion, or isolation, so reporting helps us connect you to the right support services
- Your report can prevent further harm and protect vulnerable individuals in the community
We will manage reports of harassment through our ASB process, so please get it touch through one of our contact options.
