Bamboo
Bamboo can be a lovely feature in gardens, but some types—especially fast-growing "running" varieties—can spread quickly and cause issues.
There are 2 types of bamboo commonly seen which are:
- Clumping bamboo, this tends to stay where it’s planted
- Running bamboo, which spreads underground and can cross into neighbouring gardens, potentially affecting fences, patios, and drains.
We’re here to help manage any concerns and support customers in keeping their gardens healthy and safe.
We aim to:
- Identify and assess bamboo growth during inspections or when concerns are raised
- Contain and control invasive bamboo using safe and effective methods
- Support customers with advice and guidance
- Review each situation on a case-by-case basis, ensuring a fair and practical approach tailored to the specific circumstances
If you have bamboo in your garden:
- Check whether it’s a running variety
- Keep an eye on its growth—especially near boundaries
- Avoid planting running bamboo in communal or shared areas
- Let us know if you’re worried it might be spreading
When bamboo becomes a concern, we may:
- Install root barriers to stop it spreading
- Use targeted treatments to control growth
- Remove affected soil and roots if needed
- Bamboo waste needs to be handled carefully and in the right way
- Please don’t compost it unless it’s securely contained
- We’ll make sure any bamboo we remove is disposed of properly
If you’re unsure about bamboo in your garden or think it might be causing problems please get in touch with us and we’ll assess the situation and offer support or take action if needed.
By staying informed and working together, we can keep our neighbourhoods safe, attractive, and free from unwanted plant spread.
