Descaling your shower
You might need to descale your shower if you notice:
- Lower water pressure than usual
- An uneven spray pattern
- White or chalky marks (limescale) building up
It depends on how hard your water is. The more calcium it contains, the harder your water will be.
- For hard water areas we recommend every 2–3 months
- For other water areas we recommend every 6 months
You can check to see how hard the water is in your area here.
Before you start, make sure that you've got:
- White vinegar (or suitable descaler)
- A container to place the shower head in
- Old toothbrush or soft brush
- Cloth or sponge
Step 1 – Remove the shower head
- Unscrew the shower head carefully
Step 2 – Leave it to soak
- Place it in a container of vinegar
- Leave it for at least 30 minutes, or a few hours for heavier limescale
Step 3 – Gently scrub
- Clean the nozzles and internal parts using a soft brush
Step 4 – Rinse and refit
- Rinse it thoroughly
- Reattach it and run the shower to flush through
- Don't mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals
- Avoid soaking delicate finishes, such as brass, for too long
- Only use a soft brush to avoid damaging the nozzles
- Make sure all parts, such as washers, are fitted back correctly
