Window restrictors
Window restrictors help prevent accidents. They’re there to:
- Reduce the risk of falls – even a short fall from a window can cause serious injuries
- Keep children safe – little ones are naturally curious and can move quickly
- Protect visitors and vulnerable adults – anyone staying in your home should be safe too
They still let fresh air in. They just stop windows opening wide enough for someone to fall out.
We fit restrictors because it’s a safe and simple way to prevent accidents in the home. It also helps us meet our legal responsibilities as your landlord. Restrictors help make sure everyone who lives there — now and in future — stays safe.
We know they can feel annoying at times. But they’re there to protect you.
If a restrictor is removed or damaged, it can:
- Put you, your family and your visitors at risk
- Break the safety standards we’re legally required to meet
- Lead to damage
So please don’t take them off or tamper with them.
If your window restrictor is stiff, broken, missing or stopping you from getting the airflow you need, you can let us know by raising a repair in your online account or by getting in touch. We’ll take a look and repair or replace it.
To help look after window restrictors you can:
- Use lubrication: Use a silicone-based lubricant on the hinge pins and moving parts. Avoid thick substances like grease
- Handle them gently: Avoid using excessive force when locking or unlocking to prevent damage
- Clean them regularly: Use a damp cloth with mild soapy water to clean them. Avoid soaking the cloth to prevent water from entering the locking mechanism. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth
- Avoid chemical cleaners: Steer clear of chemical-based cleaners as they can damage the locks
