Preparing for winter

As the days get shorter and the temperature starts to drop, now’s the perfect time to give your home a seasonal check-up. A few simple steps can help you stay warm and safe all year round—plus, they could save you money in the long run.

Before the cold weather sets in, give your boiler a quick test to make sure it’s working properly. If it’s been off for a while, switch it on and check for any unusual noises or error messages.
Catching issues early means you won’t be left in the cold when you need it most.

If your radiators aren’t heating up evenly—warm at the bottom but cool at the top—they might need bleeding. This helps release trapped air and keeps your heating system running efficiently, so your home stays cosy and your energy bills stay low.

How to do it: Use a radiator key to slowly release air until water starts to come out. Have a cloth ready to catch any drips and be aware you may need to top up your boiler pressure!

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for keeping your home safe. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless – and can be deadly. Testing your alarm could save lives.

Alarm Safety Checklist:

  • Press the test button – make sure it sounds
  • Check for low battery beeps
  • Replace batteries if accessible, or contact us if sealed
  • If the alarm doesn’t respond, replace it
General Tips
  • Keep alarms dust-free (vacuum gently)
  • Don’t cover or paint over alarms
  • Make sure they’re not blocked by furniture or decorations

  • Clear your gutters – Leaves and debris can cause blockages and damp
  • Check for draughts – Use draught excluders or sealant to keep the warmth in
  • Arrange a service of your appliances – Especially gas cookers and fires, to make sure they’re safe and efficient

  • If you have a gas supply in your home, we will carry out a service every 12 months to ensure everything is working correctly
  • During the service, we’ll check the safety of your appliances to help prevent hazards and minimise the chance of breakdowns
  • We'll need someone to be in your home over the age of 18 during the service. It could be you, an occupant or a trusted friend, neighbour or family

  • Leaseholders are responsible for servicing and maintaining their own gas boilers. We do encourage some simple winter checks to help make sure everything stays safe and running smoothly
